Just the fact that the land based P-39 had such a long Take-off run, makes the FL-1 Airabonita tail dragger a possible answer, quite aside from carrier planes.
The P-39 was meant to be an interceptor requiring climb as the priority, after all. The tricycle design could wait for Bell jets.

The idea of dropping the 37mm slow, short range M4 cannon, can open up better options. The RAF 20mm Hispano for the hub and the same for each wing or 3x20mm ShVAKs all in the nose for starters.
Even switching to the reliable NS-37 in the hub would address the tail-heavy bias of the P-39. A pair of UBS in the cowl renders a pattern density of 34 r/s, depending on prop gearing of the interrupter, vs 12 r/s of the 3 US nose-guns.
The ballistics match better too, all long range. Triple the firepower!
On the Russian front, using Russian guns was no problem.
Granted, the NS was heavier than the M4, but that addresses the spin problem when ammo in the nose is spent. Even loaded the P-39 was tail heavy. This change would make it more balanced even empty.
Another answer to help the trim would be to move the cowl guns and ammo supply back behind the ‘cg’ with the barrels extended, straddling the cockpit. Thus the muzzles would be in the chin position like the early Mustang. No more blinding gun flash at night, or gun smoke residue on the windshield. The barrels would add weight, but also add M/V and firing range.
