The Ancient City of Petra, Jordan – One of the 7 Wonders of the World
The ancient city of Petra in Jordan became one of the 7 New Wonders of the World when it was chosen in 2007 by a vote of 100 million people. The city’s carved rose-red sandstone rock facades, tombs, and temples became known around the world with its appearance in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in 1989.
Petra is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan. It is adjacent to the mountain of Jabal Al-Madbah, in a basin surrounded by mountains forming the eastern flank of the Arabah valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. The area around Petra has been inhabited from as early as 7000 BC.
I have included the following Points of Interest in Petra:
The Treasury
Street of Facades
The Amphitheatre
The Great Temple
Ad-Deir (Monastery) along with the As Deir Cafe opposite.
The scenery objects including the temples, camels and bedouin were created and textured by myself. I have made use of PBR textures, added night lighting effects at The Treasury which somewhat recreates the night tours that happen in real life.
I hope to add more temples & points of interest in future updates.
I have created this scenery to enable the 7 Wonders Series by the fantastic ‘twotonemurphy’ which is streamed live on Youtube on Monday evenings (19:00utc)
I have created POI’s for each temple so if you search for ‘Petra’ in the left search bar within the World Map screen you will be able to start in the air towards Petra. The nearest airfield is At-Tayyibah Airport (OJAT) loctated 28km to the West of Petra but is a very small grass strip.
Petra is also located near to the Dead Sea which is to the North of Petra and sits below sea level by around -1,200ft
