Verona is a city of the Veneto in Italy, capital of the province of Verona, with 260,000 inhabitants. It is on the banks of the river Adige (ancient Athesis), at the foot of the Lessini, at the entrance to the plain of one of the most important passes in the Alps, the Brenner. The old town retains a medieval look and is west of the river. Its name could derive from the Proto-Celtic “Var” or “Ver” which means source. Verona is a monumental city and at the same time very charming for the visitor. It has the third largest Roman amphitheater in the world, the Arena di Verona, as well as some of the most beautiful squares in the Veneto. It is world famous for being the city where the tragedy of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet takes place. In 2000 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
