EGHE – St Mary’s Airport – Isles of Scilly UK – Upgrade v1.0

This is an upgrade of EGHE St Mary’s on the Isles of Scilly plus a modest, for now, scenery mod.

This is my favourite airport in the whole wide world. And indeed place. It also has the best public toilet in the world on the main harbour with a wonderfully low height to align your plumbing and refreshing breeze to flow up it. If you haven’t been here in reality then you jolly well should go.

The first time I went here was the second to last S61 flight however long ago that was. I was so moved it kick started my puberty. I was 36 at the time so that was a billy bonus.

This is two files – the airport and a handful of tweaks of the surrounding island and islands.

At the airport the runways have been erased and replaced with ones that have something approaching the correct profiles and altitudes. The originals were much more ‘interesting’ than the norm but not relating to reality. They also had vasi lights across one of them which is no good at all. For some reason the new vasi lights refuse to have their spacing changed and are at various angles. No one said flying here would be easy.

All ground textures have been changed. Most other buildings are replaced or fill holes where there weren’t any before. A few parking spots have been added on the grass opposite the terminal and one at the hangars opposite the main apron. The apron has been levelled and there’s some minor terraforming of the airport elsewhere too.

The surroundings have been spruced up with road surfaces and foliage. Annoyingly there’s no decent wooden fence available other than some hillbilly thing I used in a couple of places so the rest is boring old mesh.

Rocks have been embedded in the runway approaches to give you the willies. It’s no good approaching when it’s only that blotchy velvet stuff. I want you to feel naked terror.

The autogen terminal has been given its marching orders but consider the replacement terminal as something of a placeholder. I’m scouting around trying to get a proper replica made as this place deserves one.

If you’re a heavy user of my output you will be a tad tired of seeing the same old buildings contorted into various forms and push granny’s head through the wall when you see them once again. Join the club. And stop doing that.

It has a new taxi system as well but the AI can’t cope with it, just as it couldn’t with the original.

Also included is verrry basic scenery upgrade of the islands themselves. You can only adjust ground textures with an airport file for some reason. Other things are best kept separate so the two files will work together.

I’ve done very little so far so don’t get moody, just a couple of basic harbours, placing a (non lit) lighthouse in the right place on St Agnes, throwing some boats down and doing the garrison walls on the coast of the main island.

The main thing the whole area could use is rocks embedded and trillions of them but that’s a very painstaking process so I ain’t guaranteeing a completion date. It’s also possible that an entire area filled with them will go pop in mad. I’ll have to experiment.

The SDK is particularly weak on houses and lots of them need replacing here. Not sure what to do about that. The island roads are all also particularly green so they’ll get covered over along with hedges added.

I’d like to get Bishop Rock light house done, the day marks on St Agnes and St Martins and the Longships lighthouse off Land’s End. All of the islands are prime helicoptering spots if and when that arrives. If any modelling types are up for that let me know or I’ll do it myself some day in the far future when Blender stops making my mind ache.

Overall the island terrain is low quality with that indeterminate fuzz with a few weedy trees teetering on top so it’s never going to make your mouth water. However it should look a bit more like the real thing when done. Don’t quote me on when.

Now book your trip there right now.
